As I was saying… “I’m originally from Colorado, my family moved to Texas in 2005. I raised my 3 sons in Lewisville and moved to the Plano area in 2018 after divorcing. The boys were all very active in sports, so time was limited then. My first day of volunteering at Second Chance, I went into an outdoor kennel and met a beautiful dog named Rhino. I sat on the bench and his 55+ pound self came and stood on my lap. I said out loud at that moment that if he didn’t get adopted, I would end up taking him home. Fast forward through 2020. Rhino and I didn’t know it, but our paths were about to be sealed in fate. Early December, I lost my fiancĂ© to COVID. Needless to say, my world was devastated. I returned to Second Chance in time to hear that they needed someone to foster Rhino. I immediately offered to foster him, knowing what a beautiful soul he had. I took Rhino the end of March of 2021 and officially adopted him on July 27, 2021, the birth date of my late fiancĂ©. Although I took Rhino in to save him, he was my strength, my friend and my savior through the worst time of my life. He sat patiently as I worked through the grieving process and licked my tears when I broke down. Ironically, he ended up saving me. I have never known a more loving, beautiful soul then this dog that was saved, and managed to save me. Volunteering lets me be part of a community of loving people that work to help cats and dogs that are scared, alone, confused and looking for love. I am excited when they get adopted and consistently spread the word of the great work Second Chance does. Seeing the transformation the severely traumatized animals go through after being at Second Chance shows what care and compassion can do!”
