Become a Foster
Second Chance SPCA is looking for fosters! Fostering with Second Chance means taking an animal temporarily into your home for care. This is a great way to support our organization from your own home! Fostering give some much needed safety and comfort to the animals that need it most. Foster animals will be in your home for a limited time and returned to the shelter for adoption. Adoptions are not done from the home setting.
What does it look like to foster with Second Chance SPCA?
Second Chance SPCA is not a foster based rescue and does not allow for fostering of currently available animals. Animals enrolled in Second Chance’s fostering programs are either too young to be safely housed in the shelter, undergoing medical issues, or waiting to be spayed or neutered. Once an animal is safely able to be returned to Second Chance, it will be housed at the shelter until adoption.
The most frequent type of fostering provided for by Second Chance SPCA is weaned puppies and kitten and pregnant, nursing moms.
What does it take to be a foster?
PATIENCE! And lots of it! These animals come to us from all different backgrounds and there are never any guarantees when it comes to animals.
Fosters need an isolated area in their home to house pets safely. Fosters need to be able to reliably transport their pets inside of the DFW area. Fosters need to be able to communicate effectively. And again, lots of PATIENCE!
Can I foster if I work full time?
Yes! Lots of our fosters work full time. While bottle babies need consistent supervision, many injured or medically complicated dogs just need a safe place to rest during the day. As long as animals have a safe place to stay and are fully weaned, they can be left alone for varying amounts of time.
What does the time commitment for a foster look like?
That depends! It can look anywhere from 2 days to 6 months. Medical cases of injured dogs can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on issues and needs. We are also looking for short term fosters (1-2 days) for neonates (bottle babies) to relieve our regular fosters. Weaned puppies and kittens usually require a 1-2 month commitment.
